Noticing numbers in a photograph
Explore how a familiar numeral contributes shape, contrast and meaning within a photograph.

A number offers two ways into a photograph. You can read what it says, then look at the shape it makes: a curve, a corner, a gap, or a patch of light against dark fabric. Moving between those ways of looking can reveal something new in a familiar picture.
Find a light number on dark clothing
The large white 3 stands out against the dark jersey. Its angular outline sits within pale piping and orange panels, while the raised yellow-and-blue ball supplies another strong shape above. The number is easy to read, and it also belongs to the portrait's arrangement of colors and edges.
Look at the shape of this particular 3. The strokes have corners rather than the smooth curves you might draw by hand. Notice the dark spaces beside its middle and the way its pale lower edge sits above the shorts. A familiar symbol can have a distinctive outline.
Then return to the whole photograph. The face, raised hand and ball offer other places to look. The numeral contributes without needing to become the only subject. You can describe what interests you without deciding that every viewer must notice the same thing first.
Compare a dark number on light clothing

A black 4 and the short line beneath it contrast with this pale jersey. The numeral sits below the face and beside the ball. Its dark strokes connect visually with other dark areas of the outfit, while the broad white column introduces a much larger pale shape to the right.
Follow the upright and crossbar of the 4. Look for the small open area enclosed by its strokes, then compare the number with the curved colored sections of the ball. Straight and rounded shapes share the portrait.
This is a separate photograph with different clothing, surroundings and gestures. It offers another example of contrast to notice. You can enjoy a light symbol on a dark surface and a dark symbol on a light surface without treating either arrangement as a rule.
Notice a numeral within a larger arrangement

The white 5 appears within the larger red shape of this outfit. Its curved lower section and straighter top make a small combination of shapes. Golden walls, pale floor lines and the edge of the pool extend the arrangement beyond the clothing.
Try looking at the numeral, then the red jersey around it, then the whole setting. Each view gives the same detail a different context. A short note might be, “The white 5 sits inside the red clothing, with pale lines continuing through the surrounding space.”
For your own experiment, a number on a book cover, a sign or an everyday object is enough. Notice its outline and the surface around it. If you make another picture, include a little more of the surroundings and compare what changes.
Keep both ways of looking
You do not have to stop reading a number to appreciate its shape. Its meaning may be part of what makes the photograph interesting. Keep a sentence about what it says and another about how it looks, then see whether those observations suggest a picture you would like to make.
Look back with curiosity.
- What do you read, and what shapes do you see?
- How does the numeral contrast with its surroundings?
- Which detail would you like to notice in another photograph?
