Noticing color accents
Explore how a small area of color invites attention within a photograph.
A small area of color can give your eye a place to begin. Red glasses, a yellow flower, or a bright cup may stand out because of the colors around them. Noticing that relationship gives you a playful way to explore a photograph, and a simple idea to try with your own camera.

In the wider garden portrait, small round red glasses and pink-red lips sit within a larger purple outfit and green surroundings. Let your attention move through the frame. You might notice the red first, or arrive there after following the clothing and foliage.
The closer portrait gives the glasses and lips more of the frame. The colors remain part of a larger relationship: purple clothing, skin, and soft green foliage all contribute. Compare the size of the accent and the amount of space around it. Which version makes you want to linger?
Explore the size of the color.

A broad area of yellow flowers enters the foreground of the first photograph. Red glasses become one color among several, with purple clothing and green leaves giving the eye other places to visit. A larger patch can change the balance even when a small accent remains visible.
In the other portrait, purple blossoms surround pale hair and skin. The relationship is quieter, with neighboring colors and gentle differences inviting a closer look. An accent can be subtle. Try describing what you see in terms of size, placement, and surrounding color; your own response can suggest the next experiment.
Look back with curiosity.
- Which color catches your attention first in each picture?
- How do the surrounding colors help the accent stand out or settle in?
- What size or placement would you enjoy trying next?
