Noticing centered compositions

Explore a subject near the middle of the picture, and notice the differences that make each side interesting.

The middle of a picture is a useful place to explore. A stairway can lead toward a central doorway; a person can occupy the space between two posts. Start by noticing that arrangement, then look for the small differences that make each side interesting.

Find a line through the middle.

Imagine a vertical line through the first photograph. The staircase and doorway gather around it, with columns and stonework on either side. The foliage differs from left to right, and details in the building vary too. A picture can have a strong center while giving you different things to discover across its sides.

The portrait below the stone wall offers another arrangement. The figure is near the middle from side to side, yet sits low within the tall frame. Centering horizontally leaves plenty of room above for the wall and windows. Follow the relationship between the person and the opening behind them.

Let the differences remain.

Blue beams and the arched opening surround the next figure. The person occupies the middle, while the turned face, hands, and costume bring different shapes to either side. Notice where your attention goes after you recognize the central arrangement.

The long blue dress spreads across the lower part of the final portrait. Look from that broad base to the hands and decorated hat. The main figure is near the center, but the photograph offers many smaller differences to follow.

Centering is a choice you can try whenever it interests you. You might enjoy the relationship between paired shapes, or the way one gesture changes an otherwise similar arrangement. A little variation can give you another reason to look.

Look back with curiosity.

  • What helps you recognize the center?
  • What differences remain across the two sides?
  • Which placement would you try again?
