Noticing bows in a portrait

Notice how loops, tails and knots bring small shapes into a portrait.

A small detail can give you a fresh way into a portrait. A bow has a knot, folded loops and trailing ends: familiar shapes that can be broad or narrow, patterned or plain. Start by describing one of them, then look again at the whole photograph to see how that detail belongs.

Find a bow between face and jacket

A light blue striped bow sits beneath the face, between the lapels of a blue jacket. Its loops extend sideways while its tails fall below the knot. The folded fabric makes a different outline from the straighter jacket edges around it.

Notice how much you can describe without knowing the outfit's name. You might see a small fan of pale shapes, a dark stripe turning around a fold, or a connection between the blue bow and blue skirt. Your words can stay simple and specific.

Now take in the whole portrait, including the outstretched arms. The bow occupies only a small part of the picture, yet it gives you a recognizable detail near the face. A useful observation might be, “The pale bow sits between two darker blue areas.” That is enough to begin.

Compare a head bow with smaller details

A broad yellow bow sits above the face. Smaller dark and pale bows appear around the neckline and sleeves, changing scale and contrast.

A broad yellow bow sits above the face. Its pale edging makes the folded outline easier to follow. Smaller dark and pale bows appear around the neckline and sleeves, giving you several sizes and placements to compare.

Choose just two. Look at how wide each loop is, where the knot sits, and whether the tails are easy to separate from what surrounds them. One bow may stand out through its color, another through its edge against a different fabric.

Return to the face and the surrounding outfit. How does the larger bow relate to the shape of the hair or the other decoration beside it? There is room for more than one reading. You can enjoy the repetition while giving your attention to a single detail.

Follow striped bows through a pale outfit

Red-and-white striped bows appear at the neckline and across the pale skirt. Their stripes offer small, distinct shapes among flowers and lace.

Red-and-white striped bows appear at the neckline and across the pale skirt. Their stripes offer small, distinct shapes among flowers and lace. Some loops are partly surrounded by hair or other decoration, so the whole bow does not need to stand alone to be recognizable.

Try following one stripe around a visible fold. Then look at a second bow and compare the direction of its pattern. The repeated colors connect the details, while their different positions keep the eye exploring.

These are observations about the photograph as it appears. They do not require a claim about who made the outfit or what the photographer intended. Keep confirmed source information with the picture and let your own visual notes remain clearly yours.

Turn one detail into a useful question

You can try this with an existing portrait, a ribbon around an everyday object, or a detail your portrait partner enjoys wearing. Describe the shape, notice its surroundings, then ask what you might explore in another photograph: more space around the loops, a different background, or a wider view that shows where the detail belongs.

The exercise is complete when you have noticed something you want to keep. A short sentence can be enough to help you see a familiar portrait afresh.

Look back with curiosity.

  • What did you enjoy noticing?
  • Which variation would you like to explore?
  • What small observation would you like to keep?
