Noticing bead patterns in a costume photograph

Follow small rounded decorations as they gather into rows, clusters and draped curves across a costume.

Small pale bead-like decorations repeat around the face, headpiece and bodice of the green-and-turquoise portrait. Their different sizes create several rhythms within one frame.

Small rounded decorations can do more than sparkle. Gathered into a row, scattered across a surface or suspended in a curve, they create a pattern your eyes can follow. Looking at their size and spacing offers a gentle way into an elaborate costume photograph.

These Colossalcon 2018 photographs move from a Mermaid Leafeon portrait to a Nereid detail and a wider view of the Nereid costume. The arrangement invites you to look closely, then carry what you noticed back into a complete portrait.

Find a rhythm of small and large shapes

Pale rounded decorations appear around the face, headpiece and bodice of the green-and-turquoise portrait. Some sit in short rows, while others gather among the larger costume shapes. Their different sizes give the pattern changes you can notice without needing to examine every detail at once.

Choose one small group near the face, then look for another below it. Compare how close the shapes sit, how their sizes change and which surrounding color makes them easiest to see. A repeated shape can connect two areas even when those areas contain many other textures.

Return to the face after following a pattern. Notice whether the decorations lead your attention toward it, around it or farther down the costume. There is room for more than one reading. Keep the connection that interests you and describe it in a simple sentence.

Follow a strand through a detail

The coral-colored costume detail places pale strands in loose curves beneath shells and flowers. Repeated round shapes turn a line into a visible rhythm.

The Nereid detail brings pale bead strands close. Their rounded shapes repeat along loose curves beneath shells and flowers, while individual decorations sit on the coral-colored fabric. You can compare a line made from many small shapes with a single larger round accent.

Follow one strand from its attachment point through the lowest part of the curve. Look at the spaces between the beads and the open space enclosed by the strand. Repetition makes the curve visible; its direction gives your attention somewhere to travel.

Try describing the pattern with a few concrete words: small, spaced, curved, clustered or repeated. You can enjoy what the photograph reveals while leaving its materials and construction as questions for another conversation. The visible arrangement already gives you plenty to explore.

Return to the whole costume

The wider Nereid portrait shows how those draped curves sit around the hips and connect with smaller decorations on the bodice and face.

The wider Nereid portrait places the draped strands around the hips, where they connect with the larger sweep of the costume. Smaller rounded decorations return on the bodice and beside the face. The detail now belongs to a person, a pose and a setting.

Move between this portrait and the detail above. In the closer view, an individual strand is easy to follow. In the wider view, several curves work together as a decorative band. Each photograph helps you notice something that the other presents at a different scale.

Choose a picture of your own and try the same return journey: whole photograph, small pattern, whole photograph again. Keep its complete frame. A short note about where your attention goes may suggest a useful detail photograph or simply help you enjoy the original for longer.

Look back with curiosity.

  • Where does repetition become a line?
  • Which small change catches your attention?
  • What does the pattern contribute to the whole portrait?
