Making a portrait beside a mural
Find room for a model and painted surroundings to share the frame.

A mural brings an existing arrangement of color and shapes into a portrait. A small change in where you stand can alter how those painted forms sit around the model. Explore the relationship together, leaving room for both the person and the surroundings.
These three portraits credit Blue Nova Cosplay and were recorded within a few minutes of each other. They offer a way to compare visible composition choices: a broad blue area, a painted figure, and a view along the wall. The observations here are new invitations to look and experiment.
Start with a generous area of color
The blue wall occupies much of the left side of the photograph. A colorful painted design rises behind the model, while the pale neighboring wall and pavement extend to the right. The white blouse and large light shapes on the skirt sit among these areas of color.
Notice how much of the mural appears above the model. Including part of a larger artwork can give the portrait a recognizable setting while leaving room for the face and clothing. Follow the blue area toward the bottom of the frame and see how it connects the different parts of the background.
For your own portrait, begin by looking at the wall together. Find a color or shape you both enjoy, then agree on a comfortable place for the model to stand. A simple first frame will give you something concrete to compare with the next variation.
Notice how the painted shapes meet the portrait

Here, a large painted figure wearing goggles appears behind the model. Its dark shapes, bright surrounding colors and outlined face are all part of the photograph. The model holds sunglasses near the waist, and the white blouse gives the foreground a broad light area.
Look at the relationships around the head and shoulders. Where do outlines pass behind the model? Which painted shapes remain easy to recognize? An overlap may create a connection you like, or it may suggest trying a slightly different position.
Try a small change at a time. Move a little to one side yourself, or invite the model to choose another comfortable position. Compare the painted shapes around the face before deciding which arrangement serves the portrait.
A mural has its own maker and context. When making new photographs, keep an available artist name or sign with your notes so you can carry that attribution forward. The supplied credit on these examples identifies Blue Nova Cosplay; it does not identify the mural artist.
Try a view along the wall

The painted wall now recedes diagonally through the background. Its colors form a different arrangement behind the model, and the view includes more of the ground beside it. The raised hands and foot give this particular portrait another shape to explore.
You can study the viewpoint with any comfortable stance. Ask the model what feels natural, then compare a view facing the wall with one looking along it. Notice how the apparent spacing between painted forms changes and how much of the surrounding place enters the frame.
Choose an accessible location where photography is welcome and leave room for people passing through. You can also explore the same questions using existing photographs: compare how artwork, architecture and a person share each frame.
Keep two variations you enjoy and name one difference. Perhaps a broad area of color gives the face more room, or a view along the wall makes the setting easier to follow. That small observation can guide the next portrait you plan together.
Look back with curiosity.
- How much of the mural helps the portrait?
- Where do painted shapes meet the model in the frame?
- What changes when you look along the wall?
